Hi there,
Gen Z is rejecting brands for performative closeness.
They want authenticity, and the proof of that is whether a brand actually knows and responds to the person behind each purchase.
72% of Gen Z say customer reviews are the brand signal they trust most, ahead of influencers, ahead of ads, ahead of anything a brand writes about itself [1]. Reviews beat marketing every time. But only when they're real.
Everyone treats Gen Z's loyalty numbers like a warning sign. But actually, 27% of Gen Z expect to keep shopping with most or all of the new brands they try, compared to just 10% of Gen X [2].
Gen Z is auditioning more brands than ever, faster than any generation before them, and deciding after the sale whether the relationship is worth keeping. The ad or the caption that got them to buy once was never the hard part. The hard part is everything a brand does next.
And on that front, the data backs it up: 69% of shoppers say post-purchase content, things like reviews, care instructions, and real customer photos and videos, makes them feel more confident in a purchase they already made [2]. That's where trust actually gets built, after someone already gave you their money, in what a brand does with that relationship.
Most brands assume Gen Z is chasing discounts. Attentive's April Consumer Pulse found that 87% of hesitant shoppers can be moved by something other than a discount, mainly product-quality reassurance and real testimonials or reviews [2]. Proof turns out to be the stronger lever than price, even for a generation everyone assumes is just deal-hunting.
That tracks with the review stat from the top of this email. Gen Z trusts customer reviews because they come from someone with nothing to gain from lying [1]. A brand can write a hundred lines about being transparent. A brand cannot write someone else's verified review for them.
Forrester predicts that a third of brands will actively damage customer trust in 2026 by rushing AI-powered self-service and personalization into place before it actually works [3].
A chatbot that uses your first name is not proof a brand knows you. An email that says "picked just for you" without real purchase data behind it is a guess dressed up as an authentic, personalized message.
Gen Z has spent years learning to spot the difference between a brand performing closeness and a brand that's actually earned it. AI just hands every brand a faster way to perform it, at a much bigger scale.
Running that AI on top of real signal, a verified purchase, a real registration, a return visit that's actually tracked instead of assumed, is what keeps personalization from becoming one more thing to distrust.
All three of these point back to the same idea. What Gen Z actually wants is proof that a brand knows who bought from them: in reviews people can verify, in what happens after checkout, in the relationship you build, and in using AI for personalization. Most brands still haven't built that kind of relationship.
What would change for your brand if you actually knew the person behind every purchase?
