TikTok Spark Ads are a native ad format that lets a brand pay to promote an existing organic TikTok post. Spark Ads can either boost a brand’s own organic post, or that of a creator, with the creator's authorization. The ad format runs from the original creator’s handle and keeps the post's likes, comments, and shares. Every interaction earned during the paid run is credited back to the original organic post.

‍

This guide covers what Spark Ads are, how the Spark code works, why brands run them, and how brands can determine the online and offline sales impact of Spark Ads.

‍

‍

What Are TikTok Spark Ads?

‍

Spark Ads are TikTok's native format for turning organic posts into paid placements. In TikTok's own words, the format lets advertisers leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in advertising, and all views, comments, shares, likes, and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to the original organic post.

‍

TikTok supports two content sources for Spark Ads: posts from your own TikTok account, and organic posts made by other creators with their authorization.

‍

Whereas standard In-Feed Ad is built inside Ads Manager and enters the feed as something produced for an ad platform., aSpark Ad enters the feed as a post that was already there, from a real handle, with visible social proof attached. Viewers can tap the profile photo or handle to visit the account, follow it, tap the sound, or comment, exactly as they would with any organic video.

‍

TikTok also treats the format's engagement as a lasting asset rather than a campaign expense. The help center describes the benefit as lasting marketing impact beyond the campaign, since all Spark Ads post engagement is attributed to the original organic post.

‍

Placement Options

‍

TikTok supports Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation, and Sales objectives.

‍

Format Constraints

‍

TikTok lifts most creative restrictions for sparked organic video, with no limits on ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate, or file size.

‍

However, there is 10 minute maximum on videos that can be sparked, a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads per TikTok Ads Manager account, and organic posts that have been banned are rejected in Ads Manager as well. A video also needs to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account.

‍

‍

How TikTok Spark Ads Work

‍

Spark Ads are a unique ad format from TikTok that requires only a short authorization between the creator and the brand. No account access is required; creators just share a short Spark Code with advertisers for promotion.

‍

Here are the steps to implement a TikTok Spark Ad:

‍

Step 1: The Creator Posts Organically

‍

Typically, brands gift product or engage the creator for paid collaboration or affiliate relationship. The creator develops the content, then posts it as organic content on their account to begin accumulating real engagement.

‍

Step 2: The Creator Generates a Spark Code

‍

Next, the creator must generate a Spark code by opening the TikTok app and clicking on the organic post your brand wants to boost. In the Ad Settings, the creator should click Generate to retrieve the Spark Code. TikTok lists post authorization as a feature, letting you customize the duration of your authorization code to meet campaign needs and minimize costs.

‍

Step 3: Add the Code in Ads Manager

‍

Inside the ad group's creative section, pull in the organic post by using the creator-provided Spark Code. TikTok notes that you can batch authorize up to 20 video codes at a time, with an authorization period to review beneath each post.

‍

Note: There are two other ways to source Spark creatives besides a code: linking a TikTok account such as your in-house organic account or a creator's account and selecting from available creatives from your authorized identities, or pushing new posts from Ads Manager to an identity authorized through TikTok Business Center.

‍

Step 4: Take the Spark Ad Live

‍

Once added to the ad group, this ad runs just like any other in Ads Manager, using the same targeting, same bidding, same optimization events.

‍

In your reporting, you’ll see that Spark Ads add engagement metrics that standard In-Feed Ads do not report. This reporting includes paid followers, paid profile visits, and music clicks alongside paid clicks, likes, shares, and comments.

‍

Two important things to remember:

  • You cannot edit a Spark Ads’ post's caption after it has been authorized as an ad, so the caption needs to be final before you create the Spark Ad.
  • Because the creator sets the authorization window, a well-performing Spark Ad can stop delivering when that window closes, even though nothing about the campaign changed. Make sure to agree on the ad promotion dates with your creator before they generate the code.

4 Main Reasons Why Brands Use TikTok Spark Ads

‍

Typically, brands choose to experiment with TikTok Spark Ads because of one or more of the following reasons:

‍

1) Performance

‍

TikTok's internal A/B testing found that Spark Ads have a 134% higher completion rate and a 157% higher 6-second view-through rate than standard In-Feed Ads, and that the Spark Ads profile landing page UI delivers a 69% higher conversion rate and 37% lower CPA.

‍

Those figures come from TikTok’s 2022 Spark Ads internal A/B test result data, split between the brand auction and the performance auction, so take them with a grain of salt. Still, this is a pretty significant performance lift.

‍

2) Social Proof

‍

Spark Ads, much like influencer promotion, leverage the social capital of the creator. A creator's post arrives with a comment section, a follower base, and a face. This ad format offers the opportunity to build brand image and brand trust, and to leverage creator content and audience to drive campaign performance with fewer resources.

‍

3) Develop Creator Partnerships

‍

While organic creator posts reach the creator's audience and whatever the algorithm decides to give them, boosting the same post with paid distribution puts a proven asset in front of an audience you choose.

‍

TikTok's guidance is to boost a creator's organic posts when you want to scale your campaign with the impact of TikTok creators, add paid traffic to branded creator content to maximize ROI from the partnership, or supply a campaign with high-quality, native-feeling branded videos.

‍

We recommend boosting your own brand's posts instead when you want to build social presence fast and grow your following, retarget followers later in lower-funnel campaigns, or run an always-on strategy combining organic and paid.

‍

4) Expand Creative Testing

‍

Spark Ads offer an affordable way to test new creative styles by leveraging organic creator content. If you come across organic content with a glowing review of your brand, this is a great opportunity to test that new creative format.

‍

Common Use Cases for Spark Ads

‍

Some common use cases for Spark Ads, in practice, include:

  • Creator-led prospecting, where UGC does the top-of-funnel work that brand-produced video cannot.
  • Product launches, where a burst of authentic reaction posts becomes paid reach in days rather than weeks.
  • Retail distribution announcements, telling a national audience the product is now at a specific retailer.
  • Always-on retention and replenishment, boosting the posts that already convert.
  • Follower growth as a byproduct, since paid followers accrue to the real account.
  • Creative diversification at low cost, running many creator angles in parallel instead of betting a quarter on one hero asset.

‍

‍

The Attribution Gap Spark Ads Leave for Omnichannel Brands

‍

While Spark Ads are highly effective for driving sales, often TikTok’s reporting falls short in telling the full story on ROI.

‍

For example, say a creator posts about your fair-trade coffee and you run that video as a Spark Ad. Then, Denise from Cincinnati watches the whole video twice, screenshots it, and buys two bags of coffee at Kroger that weekend. In your Ads Manager, TikTok will record an impression, but no conversion.

‍

This continues to happen, as the creator’s video is served to shoppers who prefer to buy in retail. Ads Manager continues to under-report sales due to lack of visibility, and your team chooses not to work with that creator again because of poor platform-reported video performance.

‍

Unfortunately, most retail spending is entirely invisible to TikTok’s ad pixel. For an omnichannel brand with retail and Amazon distribution, the DTC site is usually the smallest channel in the portfolio while being the only one the ad platform can measure.

‍

The good news is, TikTok does permit brands to send offline purchase data to the ad platform to reclaim attribution.

‍

The data pipeline opportunity, but often brands lack the offline purchase data and/or don’t have the technical resources to hash and structure the data appropriately for TikTok to ingest accurately.

How Brij Signal Supports TikTok Spark Ads

‍

Brij makes the 80% of your buyer data from retail and marketplaces visible, turning those purchases into owned, deterministic signal.

‍

Brij Signal captures verified retail and Amazon purchases through QR registration and receipt upload, then sends them into TikTok as deterministic conversion events. Those verified purchases show up as attributed conversions inside your own TikTok Ads Manager reporting, at the levels your team already works in: campaign, ad group, and ad, right alongside your other conversions.

‍

With Brij Signal, you can keep each creator's Spark Ads in their own ad group and you will see verified retail purchases per creator, and per video, in your own Ads Manager. The ad group total is that creator's verified retail impact, with each ad row is a specific video. No spreadsheet reconciliation, no separate dashboard, no promo code guessing.

‍

There are two major benefits to using Brij Signal with TikTok Spark Ads:

‍

  1. Offline sales attribution: Verified retail and marketplace purchases fire back through the Conversions API, so more of your total sales get counted. Reported ROAS on Spark Ads then rises right away because previously invisible retail purchases have just been made visible to TikTok’s system.
  2. Audience uplift: Whether or not a given purchase traces back to an ad, you are handing TikTok a stream of confirmed buyers who are net-new to your audience there. Retarget them for replenishment and cross-sell, seed lookalikes off real buyers instead of site visitors, and suppress existing customers so prospecting spend goes to actual net-new people.

‍

Creator budgets get cut on bad information all the time. A video that drove 400 in-store purchases and 12 site purchases will look like a failure in default reporting, but then shine as a top performer once retail purchases are counted. Verified retail attribution turns creator renewal from a taste judgment into a spend decision.

‍

Brij is SOC 2 Type 1 compliant, and integrates with Meta, Google, and TikTok Ads alongside CRM and email or SMS platforms, so the same verified purchase signal that improves your Spark Ads reporting also feeds retention.

FAQ

‍

What are TikTok Spark Ads?

Spark Ads are a native TikTok ad format that promotes existing organic posts as paid ads while keeping the original account handle, caption, sound, and public engagement. Brands can spark their own posts or a creator's posts with authorization, and all engagement earned during the paid run is credited to the original organic post.

‍

How do Spark Ads differ from standard In-Feed Ads?

Standard In-Feed Ads are built in Ads Manager and are not tied to an organic post. Spark Ads run from a real account, carry existing social proof, allow profile visits and follows, and report additional metrics such as paid followers and paid profile visits.

‍

How does a TikTok Spark code work?

The creator opens the video in the TikTok app, taps the three dots, taps Ad settings, and taps Generate to produce a post code, choosing how long the authorization lasts. The creator shares that code with the brand, which enters it in Ads Manager. Each code authorizes one video.

‍

Do Spark Ads require giving a brand access to a creator's account?

No. The Spark code grants permission to promote one specific video for a set period. It does not grant account access or require shared credentials.

‍

Can Spark Ads be used for conversion campaigns?

Yes. TikTok supports Spark Ads across auction objectives including Conversions, Sales, Lead generation, and App promotion, as well as upper-funnel objectives such as Reach and Video Views.

‍

Why do Spark Ads underreport performance for retail brands?

Spark Ads are measured on the conversions a brand sends back to TikTok. If a brand only sends website conversions, purchases made at retailers or on Amazon are never counted, so creator videos that drive offline sales appear to underperform.

‍

How can a brand attribute retail purchases to a specific creator's Spark Ad?

By sending verified offline purchase events into TikTok through the Conversions API and structuring the account so each creator's Spark Ads sit in their own ad group. Retail purchases then appear per creator and per video inside TikTok Ads Manager.

‍

Does Brij need access to Spark codes?

No. Brij works with the ads the Spark codes create inside the brand's own Ads Manager. Verified retail and Amazon purchases arrive as attributed conversions at the campaign, ad group, and ad level.
